COLOSSUS FORGOT HE WAS AN X-MAN — AND BECAME A FAMOUS NEW YORK ARTIST NAMED PETER NICHOLAS!
The Featured Fact

When the shattered X-Men stepped through the Siege Perilous to escape the Reavers, the portal scattered each of them into a fresh life. Piotr Rasputin surfaced in New York with his strength, his build and his gift for painting intact, but with every memory of the X-Men, Russia and the name Colossus wiped away. Reinventing himself from nothing in Uncanny X-Men #259–262 (1990), he signed his canvases Peter Nicholas and became a successful SoHo artist.

The blank slate kept painting one face. Nicholas found himself fixated on a billboard model he could not stop sketching, unaware she was Callisto, the scarred Morlock leader, herself amnesiac and remodelled by Masque into unrecognisable beauty. Two wiped minds from the same underground war had resurfaced blocks apart and fallen for each other without a single shared memory between them.

His old teammates eventually found the gallery star and made a rare, merciful choice. Forge, Banshee and Jean Grey looked at a happy man with a career and a love, and walked away rather than hand him back his grief. The mercy held only until the Shadow King seized the empty identity and aimed it at Xavier, who had to destroy the Peter Nicholas persona outright to break the possession and give Piotr his own mind back.

Why It's Obscure

The portal offered the X-Men new lives as its bargain, and the team's strongman was the one who proved a quiet life actually suited him.

1990
SoHo by way of Siberia — Uncanny X-Men #259–262 introduces Peter Nicholas, a gallery artist whose canvases sell briskly and whose past is a locked room even to him.
The model
Callisto, unrecognised — The face haunting his sketchbook belonged to a fellow amnesiac: Masque had rebuilt the Morlock leader's features, and neither of them knew the other from the tunnels.
The mercy
Left alone on purpose — Jean Grey and company found him thriving and chose his happiness over the roster, one of the few times the X-Men voluntarily left a lost member lost.
The end
Shadow King's eviction — Possession forced the issue in Uncanny X-Men #278–279: Xavier dismantled the Nicholas identity to free Piotr, and Colossus rejoined the team he had forgotten.
