COLOSSUS WAS CREMATED AND SCATTERED IN RUSSIA — EXCEPT THE BODY IN THE COFFIN WAS NOT HIS!
The Featured Fact

The ashes Kitty Pryde carried home to Russia belonged to a stranger. After Piotr Rasputin died ending the Legacy Virus, his teammates believed the story was closed in the most final way comics allow: the body was cremated, and in X-Men #110 (2001) Kitty travelled to his homeland and scattered what she had been given across the fields where he grew up.

The switch had happened before any of that. An alien hunter named Ord, warned by prophecy that a mutant from Earth would one day destroy his home planet Breakworld, reached the dying Piotr first, removed the real body and left a substitute corpse behind for the X-Men to mourn and burn. Breakworld medicine revived the genuine Rasputin, and Ord kept him caged in a hidden laboratory, running years of experiments on a prisoner the world had already buried.

Those experiments produced Benetech's celebrated mutant cure, reverse-engineered from the Legacy cure still carried in Piotr's blood — which is how the X-Men found the trail. Infiltrating the facility in Astonishing X-Men #4 (2004), Kitty phased through a locked door and came face to face with a man she had personally cremated. Piotr freed himself moments later and introduced Ord to the consequences, and Astonishing X-Men #5–6 (2004) laid out the body-swap in full.

Why It's Obscure

Most resurrections in comics cheat the grave; this one cheated the crematorium, the funeral and the urn in a single move.

THE DEATH
Airtight, apparently. Piotr's 2001 sacrifice ended a plague and looked beyond appeal: witnesses, a corpse, a cremation, and ashes resting on Russian soil.
ORD
The prophecy motive. Ord acted on a Breakworld augury naming an Earth mutant as his world's future destroyer, and decided that controlling Piotr's body counted as insurance.
BENETECH
The paper trail. A pharmaceutical firm's miracle cure carried Piotr's DNA signature inside its formula, handing Beast the clue that sent the team through Benetech's doors.
#4
The locked room. Joss Whedon and John Cassaday ended Astonishing X-Men #4 (2004) on Kitty opening a cell and finding her dead teammate breathing inside it.
