The gentlest X-Man spent months locked inside his own armour. During the Mutant Massacre, the Marauders were slaughtering the underground Morlocks, and Piotr Rasputin fought through the tunnels until the killing pushed him past his own code: after Harpoon gravely wounded Kitty Pryde, Colossus seized the whirlwind Marauder Riptide and snapped his neck — the first life the pacifist farmer-poet of the X-Men ever took in a rage.
Riptide's throwing stars had already done quiet, terrible work. They ruptured Piotr's organic steel form from within, and the bio-energy that sustains his transformed body began leaking out through invisible breaks until he collapsed at the mansion. In Uncanny X-Men #212 (1986), Magneto — then an uneasy ally living at the school — used his mastery of metal, with Shadowcat's help, to seal the ruptures and hold the steel man together. The treatment saved Piotr's life and left him paralyzed, shipped to Muir Island to recover beside the other Massacre casualties.
Movement eventually returned; freedom took longer. Magneto's repair had fused something fundamental: Piotr was now trapped in his armoured form, able to claw his way back to flesh only by total, unbroken concentration — and any distraction snapped him straight back to steel. The patch had also quietly added mass, leaving the healed Colossus measurably bigger and stronger than the one who had entered the tunnels.
Why It's Obscure
A healer who works in metal saved a man made of metal — and the price was a spine that would not answer and a human shape he could only visit by concentrating.
