Today's Fact

Before the energy blasts and the Binary years, Carol Danvers carried a stranger gift — one that hijacked her body every time it fired.

CAROL DANVERS HAD A SEVENTH SENSE — IT KNOCKED HER OUT COLD AND BECAME MS. MARVEL WITHOUT HER PERMISSION!
The Featured Fact

Carol Danvers debuted as a hero in Ms. Marvel Vol. 1 #1 (January 1977) carrying a power that modern readers almost never hear about: a precognitive seventh sense. Born of the Psyche-Magnitron explosion that fused her with Kree genetics back in Captain Marvel #18 (1969), the sense delivered flashes of danger and crisis before they happened — a genuine glimpse of the future, arriving on a schedule she did not control and could not switch off.

The early version came with a catch that would horrify any pilot: at first, Carol did not even know she had an alter ego. When the seventh sense detected a crisis, she would black out, and Ms. Marvel would take over in a burst of energy — a separate-feeling personality in a red-and-blue Kree-styled costume, complete with a long scarf. Carol woke up with gaps in her memory and no idea that the new heroine in the headlines was her, while Ms. Marvel, in turn, believed herself an amnesiac stranger.

Even after the two halves of her life merged, the sense stayed unreliable — random precognitive flashes that could leave her vulnerable at the worst possible moment rather than ready for it. Marvel's own character profile still lists the seventh sense among her abilities, while noting that it manifests randomly and has largely faded away, quietly retired as her energy powers grew into the ones everyone knows today.

Why It's Obscure

A headline power for one short era, then buried so deep that most Captain Marvel fans have never heard it named.

1969
The explosion that wrote it in — the Psyche-Magnitron blast beside Mar-Vell in Captain Marvel #18 (1969) melded Carol's genes with a Kree template, and the seventh sense surfaced years later as part of that inheritance.
1977
Two women, one body — in the first Ms. Marvel issues the sense acted like a tripwire: danger approached, Carol fainted, and a costumed stranger with no memory of Carol Danvers went to work in her place.
The cost
A warning that disarms you — an uncontrolled blackout is the worst possible delivery system for a danger warning; the power routinely dropped Carol at exactly the moments a crisis was arriving.
The fade
Still on the books — Marvel's official profile keeps the seventh sense listed as a precognitive flash ability, while conceding it fires randomly and has largely faded — a power demoted to a footnote.
