Today's Fact
Carol Danvers rejoined the Avengers in 1998 with diminished powers and something to prove. The bottle she used to cope nearly ended her career — and her life.
When Carol Danvers returned to the Avengers in Avengers Vol. 3 (1998) under the new name Warbird, she was hiding two secrets: her cosmic Binary power was mostly gone, and she was drinking to manage the shame of it. Erratic flying, blown orders and slurred defiance followed, culminating in the Live Kree or Die crossover, where a drunken, disobedient Warbird endangered the team and walked out ahead of a court-martial in issue #7.
The Avenger who recognised the pattern first was Tony Stark — because it was his own. Stark, a recovering alcoholic, confronted her privately, even unmasking himself to earn her trust, and was rewarded with denial and a brawl. The bottom came in Seattle, in Iron Man Vol. 3 #18–25: a blackout-drunk Carol hurled Iron Man through the wing of a passenger jet, then collapsed with alcohol poisoning and woke to a doctor's warning that another drink could kill her.
What turned her around was not a battle but a meeting. After fighting sober at Stark's side one last time to prove she could, Carol finally walked into the Alcoholics Anonymous meeting he had been inviting her to all along — and later stood before an Avengers tribunal in Avengers Vol. 3 #26 to say the sentence out loud: she was Warbird, and she was an alcoholic, thirty-day chip in hand.
Why It's Obscure
Superhero comics had shown Stark's addiction for decades. Carol's arc flipped the camera: the sponsor's chair is its own kind of heroism, and the confession is its own kind of fight.
