Today's Fact

In 1977 Carol's toughest recurring opponent was not a Kree warship. It was her publisher, arguing about what women were allowed to read.

BEFORE SHE WAS CAPTAIN MARVEL, CAROL DANVERS WAS J. JONAH JAMESON'S MAGAZINE EDITOR — AND HE COULD NOT CONTROL HER EITHER!
The Featured Fact

When Carol Danvers relaunched her civilian life in Ms. Marvel Vol. 1 #1 (January 1977), by Gerry Conway and John Buscema, the former NASA security chief did not join another agency. She moved to New York and took a desk job — as editor of Woman, a new magazine for women published by the Daily Bugle's own J. Jonah Jameson, where she arrived with a bestselling book about her space-program years already behind her.

The working relationship was a war conducted in memos. Jameson, never knowingly progressive, wanted the magazine filled with diets, fashion and recipes; Carol wanted serious journalism and editorials, and said so to his face in their very first salary negotiation. Contemporary accounts of the series note that Jameson came to regret the hire precisely because his new editor was entirely unintimidated by him — a personnel problem he shared with a certain web-swinging photographer down the hall.

Then the double life turned the job into a farce worthy of the Bugle itself. Jameson, delighted by the mysterious new heroine in town, assigned his editor to investigate and expose Ms. Marvel — unaware that Carol was suffering blackouts and did not yet know the woman in the costume was her. The editor of Woman was ordered to hunt the one story in New York she could never safely file.

Why It's Obscure

The costumed half fought the Scorpion in issue one. The editor half fought for her magazine's soul in the same twenty-two pages.

1977
A desk of her own — Ms. Marvel #1 opens Carol's solo series with a masthead, not a mission briefing: editor of Woman, effective immediately.
The boss
Jameson, publisher — The man who made a career of menace headlines about Spider-Man now had to approve budgets for an editor who argued back.
The brief
Puff versus journalism — He commissioned diets and fashion; she delivered exposés and editorials, and the magazine's identity was the battlefield.
The assignment
Investigate yourself — Her first big task from Jameson was exposing Ms. Marvel, a target she was blacking out and becoming without knowing it.
