Today's Fact
Fifty years of origin story said a machine gave Carol her powers. Her mother had been quietly disagreeing the whole time.
The version Carol believed for decades said the Psyche-Magnitron explosion beside Mar-Vell in Captain Marvel #18 (1969) rewrote her into a human-Kree hybrid. The Life of Captain Marvel #4 (2018), by Margaret Stohl, Carlos Pacheco and Erica D'Urso, pulled the floor out from under it: Carol's mother Marie was really Mari-Ell, a decorated Kree captain sent to Earth to observe and report back, who fell for Joe Danvers and never left.
Which makes the name on the birth certificate a cover story. Mari-Ell named her daughter Car-Ell — “Champion” in the Kree tongue — and the family softened it to Carol so the girl would blend into Boston. The famous explosion did not hand Carol alien powers at all; it shook loose abilities that had been sitting in her blood since birth, waiting for a moment of extreme stress to switch on.
Mari-Ell spells out the new family motto while the two of them stand together against a Kree Kleaner sent to drag her home: the powers were never borrowed, never a gift, never an accident — they were Carol's own. She dies shielding her daughter in that fight, which means Carol learned her real name and lost the only person who had always known it in the same storyline.
