CAROL DANVERS BURNED OUT HER BINARY POWERS TO SAVE THE SUN — AND CAME BACK TO THE AVENGERS AS WARBIRD!
The Featured Fact

As Binary, Carol Danvers drew her strength from a white hole and ranked among the heaviest hitters the Avengers had ever fielded. Quasar #34 (1992), Part 17 of Operation: Galactic Storm, put that power bill on the table: a Nega-Bomb blast was strangling Earth's sun, and the only hero close enough and strong enough to reignite it was her.

She poured her cosmic energy into the dying star and saved it — and the effort burned her Binary powers down to a fraction of what they had been. What returned to Earth months later was a Carol running on her older Kree-derived abilities, quietly diminished, and determined that her teammates would not find out how much she had lost.

She rejoined the Avengers under a new name taken from a fighter jet, Warbird, and hid the shortfall until it surfaced in the field. The comeback cost her more than power: the Warbird years carried a court-martial and a fight with alcoholism before she rebuilt herself, proof that the sun was not the only thing she had to reignite.

Why It's Obscure

She traded a star's worth of power to keep one particular star alive, then reported back for duty and hoped nobody would do the maths.

1992
Part 17 of a 19-part war — Operation: Galactic Storm sprawled across the Avengers titles in 1992, and its costliest single act was not a battle but a rescue performed inside a star.
Quasar #34
The Scorched Sun — The issue's title names the stakes plainly: the Nega-Bomb's fallout was killing the sun, and Binary's energy was the only available kindling.
Warbird
A jet's name for a grounded star — Carol chose the call sign of a fighter plane, a nod to her Air Force years, for the identity she wore while her cosmic strength recovered.
The secret
Beast noticed first — Beast measured her reduced output early in the new Avengers run; Carol asked him to keep it quiet rather than be benched from the team she had just rejoined.
