ROGUE STOLE CAROL DANVERS' POWERS AND MEMORIES IN A SINGLE TOUCH — AND XAVIER COULD ONLY GIVE HALF OF HER BACK!
The Featured Fact

Avengers Annual #10 (1981) opens with a mystery: an unidentified woman falls from the Golden Gate Bridge, is pulled from the water by Spider-Woman, and cannot say who she is. She was Carol Danvers, then fighting as Ms. Marvel, and a teenage Brotherhood mutant named Rogue had just made her first appearance in comics at Carol’s expense, holding skin-to-skin contact far too long and permanently absorbing Carol’s strength, flight, invulnerability and memories in one unbroken drain.

Professor X rebuilt what he could. Working telepathically, Charles Xavier restored Carol’s factual memories, but the emotional wiring attached to them stayed severed: she could recite her own life like a personnel file while feeling nothing for the people in it. The powers never came back through that route at all, which is why a powerless Carol spent the following period at the X-Mansion as the team's pilot and intelligence hand.

The theft cut in both directions. Rogue kept a copy of Carol’s personality lodged in her own mind for years, a passenger voice that steadily eroded her grip on which thoughts were hers. When Rogue later defected to the X-Men begging Xavier for help, the woman she had emptied was living under the same roof, and Carol’s furious response to the arrangement helped push her off Earth entirely.

Why It's Obscure

One debutante mutant, one bridge in San Francisco, and the original Ms. Marvel lost her powers, her past and her feelings in a single afternoon.

1981
A villain's first panel — Rogue debuted in Avengers Annual #10 as a Brotherhood recruit, and the permanent theft from Carol was the calling card Marvel gave her.
The bridge
Golden Gate, no memory — Spider-Woman fished the blanked Carol out of San Francisco Bay, and hospital staff could find nothing wrong except that the woman herself was missing.
Xavier
Facts without feelings — Xavier’s repair job is the eerie detail: names, dates and faces returned, while every attachment those memories should have carried stayed switched off.
1992
The fight arrived late — The actual rooftop struggle between Rogue and Carol went unseen for eleven years, finally drawn in Marvel Super-Heroes #11 (1992) long after its consequences were canon.
