THE BROOD EXPERIMENTED ON CAROL DANVERS — AND ACCIDENTALLY TURNED HER INTO BINARY, A LIVING WHITE HOLE!
The Featured Fact

The worst lab accident in Brood history started with the best of intentions — theirs. Captured during a space voyage in Uncanny X-Men #163 (1982), Carol Danvers was singled out by the insectoid Brood for her unusual hybrid physiology and subjected to evolutionary experiments meant to reshape her into something useful to the hive. Her altered genes answered the procedure by unlocking a potential nobody in the room had budgeted for.

In Uncanny X-Men #164 (1982) she emerged as Binary: her whole body wreathed in stellar fire, hair streaming like a comet, directly wired into the energy of a white hole. In that form she could generate the output of a star, cross space faster than light, and recharge a starship's dead power cells single-handed — which she promptly did, because the Brood had kindly parked her next to a ship that needed exactly that.

Offered a place among her rescuers afterwards, she declined and took to the spaceways instead, spending years as a cosmic heavy-hitter far from Earth. The white-hole link eventually burned down to her familiar power set, but the Binary years remain the statistical peak of her life: the one stretch where a mid-tier Avenger had briefly been reclassified as a stellar event.

Why It's Obscure

Before the sash and the promotion came a decade in deep space that most summaries skip in a single sentence.

1982
The procedure — the Brood chose Carol for experimentation because her genetics were already a one-off hybrid; their machines pushed that uniqueness somewhere it was never meant to go.
WHITE HOLE
The power source — Binary did not merely store energy; she tapped a white hole directly, the theoretical mirror of a black hole, pouring stellar output out instead of swallowing it.
THE LOOK
Living flame — in Binary form her skin darkens to a starfield red-black and her hair becomes a plume of fire, the most dramatic silhouette she has ever worn on a cover.
1992
The encore — a decade later, during a war between two galactic empires, Binary spent most of her stored white-hole power in a single act: saving Earth's sun.
