Every hero has a pet. Carol Danvers has a diplomatic incident with whiskers. Her orange tabby Chewie — named, of course, for Chewbacca — rode along on Carol’s deep-space posting in Captain Marvel Vol. 8 #1 (2014), where Rocket Raccoon took one look at her and delivered the diagnosis nobody wanted: that is not a cat. That is a Flerken, one of the most dangerous species in the galaxy, and it has to go. Carol refused to give her up.
A Flerken only looks like a housecat. Packed into the cute frame are pocket dimensions, a nest of tentacles that comes out of the mouth when threatened, and a talent for laying eggs by the hundred. Rocket’s professional opinion — as a bounty hunter, he also noted that a live Flerken was worth a fortune — was overruled, and Chewie stayed aboard as the ship’s officially unofficial cat.
Then came Captain Marvel Vol. 8 #7 (2014), and the litter heard round the galaxy: Chewie laid 117 eggs. They hatched. All of them. Carol’s ship filled wall to wall with Flerken kittens — each one, genetically, a walking pocket dimension with tentacles — while Rocket’s warnings echoed off every bulkhead. The most powerful Avenger on the roster was suddenly running a nursery for a hundred and seventeen apex predators the size of kittens.
Chewie herself was no retcon: she debuted back in Giant-Size Ms. Marvel #1 (2006), when Carol still flew as Ms. Marvel, and got her name in Ms. Marvel Vol. 2 #5 (2006) — eight years of panel time as an ordinary cat before one raccoon spoiled the secret. She is still out there, presumably. So are the hundred and seventeen.
Why It's Obscure
One orange tabby, one raccoon whistleblower, one hundred and seventeen consequences.
