Today's Fact

A Marvel hero American readers literally could not buy — Brian Braddock spent his first year on sale in one country only.

CAPTAIN BRITAIN WAS BRITAIN-ONLY FOR OVER A YEAR — AMERICA COULD NOT BUY HIS FIRST COMIC!
The Featured Fact

Physics student Brian Braddock made his debut in Captain Britain Weekly #1, cover-dated the week ending October 13, 1976, in a story by Chris Claremont and Herb Trimpe. The comic was published by Marvel UK and sold exclusively in the United Kingdom, and it was the first original material Marvel UK had ever produced, because until then the British office had done nothing but reprint American stories. A brand-new Marvel hero existed, and no comic shop in America could sell him to you.

He stayed that way for more than a year. Captain Britain Weekly ran thirty-nine issues, the strip then moved on into a British Spider-Man anthology, and through all of it Brian's adventures simply were not published in the United States. American readers finally met him in Marvel Team-Up #65, by Claremont and John Byrne, where exchange student Brian became Peter Parker's new roommate at Empire State University, and the same two-part story that imported Captain Britain also introduced the assassin Arcade and his Murderworld.

The strangest part is where the Britain-only hero was actually made. The stories were created by Marvel's American staff in the United States, supervised from New York, and then shipped across the Atlantic for publication in Britain alone. Captain Britain was an American-made comic that America was not allowed to read, a hero held back from his own publisher's home market for the first year of his life.

Why It's Obscure

A wizard's test, a death Merlyn quietly undid, and a multiverse full of Brians who made the opposite choice.

The choice
Amulet over sword — dying after a motorcycle crash while fleeing the Reaver, Brian was offered the Amulet of Right or the Sword of Might by Merlyn and Roma; deciding he was no warrior, he chose the amulet and became Captain Britain.
The rebuild
Killed, then rebuilt better — on Earth-238 the Fury killed Brian during the Jaspers' Warp; Merlyn recovered what was left and remade him, building the powers into Brian's body itself so they became innate, with the costume reduced to a battery and amplifier.
The Corps
One Brian per Earth — Brian later learned he was a single member of the Captain Britain Corps, with a counterpart guarding nearly every Earth in the multiverse; his own father, Sir James Braddock, had come from Otherworld itself.
The double debut
Arcade came with him — the Marvel Team-Up story that finally brought Brian to America also gave Marvel the hitman Arcade and Murderworld, so two long-running fixtures crossed the Atlantic in the same luggage.
