Today's Fact
Steve Rogers survived ice, war and a dozen years in a hell dimension. What finally benched him was a villain who reached in and switched his serum off.
Aboard the hijacked S.H.I.E.L.D. doomsday platform Gungnir, Captain America Vol. 7 #21 (2014) by Rick Remender and Nic Klein pits Steve Rogers against Ran Shen, the defector turned living weapon called the Iron Nail. Shen's tendrils could siphon the enhancements out of other bodies — he had already used them on Nick Fury — and during the struggle for Gungnir's core he drove them into Rogers.
What the tendrils pulled out was the Super-Soldier Serum itself. With it went the suspended ageing the serum had quietly provided for decades: Rogers collapsed into the elderly man his birth certificate said he should be, white-haired and frail, while the platform burned around him. He still found the strength for one last shield throw into Gungnir's reactor before Falcon carried him out of the wreckage.
The aftermath rearranged the mantle for years. Declared unfit for the field in Captain America Vol. 7 #25, the aged Rogers formally handed the shield and the name to Sam Wilson and reinvented himself as a mission coordinator, directing younger heroes from a command chair — proof that removing the serum removed the soldier's body, but not one ounce of the soldier.
Why It's Obscure
Other stories had weakened Rogers or reverted him to the scrawny kid from Brooklyn. This one did something crueller: it let time collect ninety years of debt at once.
