Today's Fact
Cable's first team did not fall in battle or break up over money — it was renamed by a trademark letter from a small Balkan government.
When Cable assembled his mercenary squad in the present day — G.W. Bridge, Domino, Grizzly, Hammer and Kane — he called them the Wild Pack, and under that name they took jobs for the arms dealer Tolliver, including a demolition run in Tehran. The name was good, punchy, and already taken: Silver Sable had led a Wild Pack out of Symkaria for years, hunting war criminals under licence from the Symkarian government.
Symkaria treated the name as state property, and a legal notice over the trademark reached Cable's team while they were regrouping in Austria, as retold in Cable: Blood and Metal Vol. 1 #1 (1992). Outgunned by lawyers rather than soldiers, the squad simply voted on a replacement and landed on Six Pack — six operators, one crate of something strong.
The renamed Six Pack flew straight into the Afghanistan mission where they first clashed with Stryfe, and the new name stuck for the rest of the team's brutal history. Cable has faced Apocalypse, clones of himself and the end of several futures; the only opponent who ever beat him without firing a shot was Silver Sable's legal department.
Why It's Obscure
Armies could not stop Cable's first team, but a cease-and-desist from Symkaria rewrote its letterhead mid-mission.
