Today's Fact
His guns are the backup plan. The main event is a psychic holding a metal plague shut inside his own skin, every hour of every day.
As an infant, Nathan Summers was infected by Apocalypse with a techno-organic virus that rewrites living tissue into living metal. The infection is the whole reason he was carried nearly two thousand years into the future to be raised by the Askani — a journey retold in The Adventures of Cyclops and Phoenix Vol. 1 #1–4 (1994) — because only future medicine and future training stood between the baby and total conversion.
What saved him was his own mutation waking up absurdly early. Nathan's telekinesis learned to clamp down on the virus and hold its spread in check, and it has essentially never been allowed to clock out since. That single, permanent assignment quietly explains the great Cable paradox: a man repeatedly described as one of the most powerful psychics alive spent his classic years solving problems with enormous guns, soldiering, and tactics, because the overwhelming share of his power was already spent on not becoming a machine.
The arrangement has visible stakes. Push the telekinesis too hard elsewhere and the conversion creeps — the metal side of his body, including his techno-organic left arm and his glowing left eye, is the territory the virus already won. His Psimitar staff exists partly as a workaround, a focus that channels his psychic energy into force blasts without loosening his grip on the infection. Cable is not a psychic who happens to carry a virus; he is a dam that happens to walk around giving orders.
Why It's Obscure
Ask why the time-travelling super-psychic shoots people, and the answer is accounting: nearly all of his power is already spent.
