CABLE WAS KILLED BY HIMSELF — HIS TEENAGE SELF SHOT HIM FOR FAILING HIS OWN MISSION!
The Featured Fact

The assassin who finally put Cable down in Extermination #1 (2018) was the one opponent who knew every move he would make: Cable himself, decades younger. The teenage Nathan Summers travelled forward, judged that his older self had grown lax about guarding the timeline, and opened fire on the old soldier without a word of warning.

The younger man's complaint was specific. A group of time-displaced young mutants had been living years beyond their proper era, warping history a little more with every month they stayed, and the elder Cable had protected them instead of sending them home. His teenage counterpart decided that failure disqualified him from the job entirely, and took the job by force.

So the grizzled veteran spent the next chapter of his life replaced by his own adolescent self, a replacement the family simply had to absorb at the dinner table. A later account in Cable #4 (2020) added the bleakest twist of all: the old man, remembering exactly how the ambush would unfold, quietly swapped the time machine in his cybernetic arm for a bomb beforehand — meaning he had recognised his killer, understood what was coming, and let it happen anyway.

Why It's Obscure

Plenty of heroes have evil twins and hostile clones; almost none have been performance-reviewed by their younger self, with a gun, and failed.

The verdict
Too lax — the teenage Nathan concluded that decades of war had softened his older self into a guardian who tolerated a broken timeline.
The ambush
No warning — Extermination #1 (2018) ends its first act with the old soldier gunned down and the shooter's face revealed as his own, only younger.
The replacement
Same man, new management — the younger Cable stayed in the present and took over the mission, the name and eventually a seat at the family table.
The twist
He let it happen — Cable #4 (2020) reveals the elder Nathan prepared for his own murder in advance, rigging his arm so his killer would inherit the tools to finish the work.
