CABLE WAS RAISED BY HIS OWN PARENTS IN DISGUISE — AND HIS HALF-SISTER RAN THE WHOLE THING!
The Featured Fact

Cable's foster parents were his real parents. After the infant Nathan Summers was sent almost 2,000 years into the future to survive the techno-organic virus, he was received by Mother Askani, founder of the Clan Askani. What the boy never knew: Mother Askani was Rachel Summers — Nathan's half-sister from an alternate timeline, the daughter of Scott Summers and Jean Grey in the "Days of Future Past" future, grown old in Cable's era and running an entire religion for one purpose: keeping her baby brother alive.

When Mother Askani was gravely wounded, she reached back through time and pulled the minds of Scott Summers and Jean Grey — who were on their honeymoon — into cloned bodies in the future. For twelve years they lived undercover as "Slym" and "Redd" Dayspring, raising Nathan as their son without ever telling him who they really were. Jean even taught him to use his telekinesis to hold the techno-organic virus in check — the skill that defined the rest of his life.

The full story is The Adventures of Cyclops and Phoenix #1–4 (1994), by Scott Lobdell and Gene Ha. The disguised family thwarted Apocalypse's attempt to transfer his essence into a new host — Nathan's clone, Stryfe. Mother Askani died in the battle, Scott and Jean were snapped back to their own time in mid-honeymoon, and Nathan grew up to become Cable — having been raised by his own parents and never knowing it.

Why It's Obscure

Yesterday's fact covered the baby being sent to the future. This is the part almost nobody knows: who actually raised him there — a time-displaced half-sister posing as a prophet, and his own parents living under fake names for twelve years.

1994
The miniseries that rewrote a childhood — The Adventures of Cyclops and Phoenix #1–4 (1994), by Scott Lobdell and Gene Ha, retconned Cable's entire upbringing in four issues.
SLYM & REDD
The aliases were hiding in plain sight. Scott's school nickname was "Slim"; Jean was "Redd" for her red hair. The most wanted family in the future disguised itself with its own nicknames.
12 YEARS
A twelve-year honeymoon detour. Scott and Jean raised Nathan for twelve years in the future — then woke up back in their own time, where almost no time had passed at all.
THE SISTER
Family planning, Summers-style. Rachel Summers founded the Askani order as Mother Askani specifically so her alternate-timeline baby half-brother would survive to destroy Apocalypse.
