Today's Fact
Wolverine's inventor performed the operation, expected a loyal assassin as payment, and got neither loyalty nor thanks.
When Bullseye fell from a telephone wire in Daredevil Vol. 1 #181 (1982) — the same rooftop war in which he had murdered Elektra — he survived with his spine shattered and his body paralysed. Daredevil even visited the hospital to play Russian roulette at his bedside with an unloaded gun. A lesser assassin's career ends there; Bullseye's was rebuilt in Japan, starting in Daredevil Vol. 1 #197 (1983).
The surgeon was Lord Dark Wind — Kenji Oyama, the scientist who had pioneered bonding adamantium to living bone, the process later used on Wolverine. Dark Wind's people recovered Bullseye and laced his damaged bones with strips of that same virtually unbreakable metal, spine first, restoring his movement completely. Later accounts add the skull and fists to the list of reinforced bones.
The operation came with an invoice: Dark Wind expected Bullseye to serve as his personal assassin. Bullseye instead healed up, flew home to New York, and went straight back to freelance murder and his vendetta against Daredevil — leaving one of the most dangerous men in Japan holding an unpaid bill and no assassin.
Why It's Obscure
Daredevil broke him on a rooftop; a Japanese crime lord put him back together with the rarest metal on Earth.

The target on the mask is plain to see in every shot — the adamantium underneath it, by design, is not.
