The strangest identity theft in Daredevil history ran in Daredevil Vol. 1 #284–290 (1991), written by Ann Nocenti. With Matt Murdock gone from New York and suffering amnesia, Bullseye pulled on the red Daredevil costume himself — at first gleefully playing at heroism, robbing the rich and handing money to the poor while committing crimes in the Man Without Fear’s name.
The costume got inside his head. Bullseye’s grip on his own identity, never sturdy, gave way entirely: he stopped pretending and started believing he truly was Daredevil. Hell’s Kitchen now had a horned protector who was actually its most gleeful murderer, convinced of his own heroism.
Murdock’s counter-move was pure mirror logic. Recovering, Matt found the costume Bullseye had discarded — Bullseye’s own black-and-white target-marked suit — put it on, and confronted the impostor wearing it. Beaten by a man dressed as himself, Bullseye’s delusion cracked; he came back to his senses, such as they are, and the two men walked away wearing the right names again.
Why It's Obscure
Plenty of villains have framed a hero. Almost none have moved into the hero’s life so completely that only a costume swap in reverse could evict them.
