Today's Fact

The vampire hunter's first enemy fed before he had taken his first breath — and the women of Madame Vanity's house finished the delivery themselves.

BLADE WAS BORN IN A LONDON BROTHEL IN 1929 — WHILE DEACON FROST, POSING AS THE DOCTOR, FED ON HIS MOTHER!
The Featured Fact

Eric Brooks — the man the underworld would call Blade — was born on October 24, 1929, in Soho, London, in the brothel run by Madame Vanity. His mother, born Tara Brooks and living under the name Vanessa, had fled to England while pregnant, sent ahead by his father Lucas Cross before Cross was taken prisoner in Latveria. When her labour turned dangerous, the house sent for a doctor.

The man who arrived was no doctor. He was Deacon Frost, a vampire, and instead of delivering the child he fed on the mother as she gave birth — the flashback is laid out in The Tomb of Dracula Vol. 1 #13 (1973). Frost's blood passed its enzymes into the newborn through the attack: not enough to turn the boy, but enough to mark him permanently, a human tainted by a vampire's bite before he had ever been bitten.

The women of the house drove Frost off with crucifixes before he could reach the child, but Tara died, and Eric grew up an orphan raised in Madame Vanity's brothel. The enzymes he carried from that night — the senses, the resistance, the long life — were the inheritance. Everything else about Blade, the training and the teakwood knives and the vendetta, he built himself on top of a murder that happened during his own birth.

Why It's Obscure

Most hunters choose the life; Blade's was chosen for him in the delivery room, by the thing holding the forceps.

October 24, 1929
The date — Blade's birth is fixed to a specific day in Soho, making him a near-century-old hunter beneath the sunglasses.
Madame Vanity
The household — Vanity was more than a madam: Marvel's later accounts place her in the Order of Tyrana, the same secret society as Blade's father.
Tara / Vanessa
Two names — His mother was born Tara Brooks and took the name Vanessa in hiding — which is why different tellings, films included, name her differently.
#13, 1973
The flashback — Blade debuted in Tomb of Dracula #10, and three issues later the series stopped to show readers exactly what Frost had done in that room.
