Today's Fact
For his first quarter-century in print, the Daywalker could not walk anywhere with any powers at all.
The Blade who debuted in The Tomb of Dracula Vol. 1 #10 (1973) was a skilled but essentially human hunter: his one gift was immunity to vampire bites, a legacy of Deacon Frost feeding on his mother during his birth. No super-strength, no healing factor, no fangs — just teakwood knives, aim, and spite. That changed in Peter Parker: Spider-Man Vol. 2 #8 (1999).
Teaming with Spider-Man against a mind-controlled Morbius, Blade was bitten by the Living Vampire — a scientific pseudo-vampire, not a supernatural one. Blade's birth-given enzymes reacted strangely with that unnatural strain, and the hunter emerged with a vampire's strengths and none of the classic weaknesses, sunlight included. The prey started calling him by a new title: the Daywalker.
Then continuity reached back and edited its own work. In Blade Vol. 4 #5 (2007), Blade states flatly that the Morbius bite had no effect on him at all — he had been a dhampir since birth, powers latent in his blood from the night Frost attacked his mother. The bite that built the modern Blade was officially un-happened, and the Daywalker kept the powers while losing the explanation.
Why It's Obscure
One bite, two official histories — the upgrade survived both of them, which is more than the explanation managed.
