Today's Fact

The Daywalker's first teacher played trumpet, carried a silver cane, and saved the boy who would one day have to stake him.

BLADE WAS MADE BY A JAZZ TRUMPETER — JAMAL AFARI TAUGHT A NINE-YEAR-OLD TO HUNT VAMPIRES, AND BLADE HAD TO KILL HIM!
The Featured Fact

Eric Brooks was born in 1929 at Madame Vanity's brothel in Soho, London, in the worst delivery room imaginable: the doctor summoned for his mother Tara's complications was Deacon Frost, a vampire who fed on her during the birth and killed her. The orphan grew up in the brothel, and one December day at nine years old, coming home from school, he found three vampires attacking an old man — and jumped in to help.

The old man hardly needed rescuing. He killed his attackers with a silver cane and introduced himself as Jamal Afari, an American jazz trumpeter who hunted vampires between gigs. Afari moved into Madame Vanity's and raised the boy as his own, training Eric in music and in combat, including the teakwood daggers that became his signature. The pupil's gift for edged weapons was so obvious that it earned him the name he still carries: Blade.

The apprenticeship ended the way vampire stories insist on ending. Dracula himself got to Afari and turned him, and the student had to mercy-kill the mentor who had raised him — Blade's first kill of someone he loved, and the start of his lifelong war on Dracula, whom he then tracked and staked repeatedly across Europe, Asia Minor and Asia without ever quite finishing the job.

Why It's Obscure

Every hunter in the Marvel Universe has an origin wound; Blade's came with a music teacher attached.

Soho, 1929
Born in the middle of the crime — Deacon Frost posed as the doctor at Eric's birth, fed on Tara Brooks as she delivered, and left the infant an orphan in a brothel.
Age nine
The rescue that reversed — the boy thought he was saving an old man from three vampires; the old man finished the fight himself and adopted his would-be rescuer.
The silver cane
Trumpet by night, stakes by later that night — Afari taught Eric music alongside vampire hunting, a double curriculum no school on Earth has offered before or since.
The hardest kill
Tuition, repaid in full — when Dracula turned Afari, Blade destroyed the man who made him, and spent the following decades hunting the vampire responsible across three continents.
