Today's Fact

Her handlers kept spare bodies in storage, in case their best asset ever had the bad manners to die.

BLACK WIDOW CAME BACK FROM THE DEAD IN A CLONE BODY — WITH EVERY MEMORY THE RED ROOM TRIED TO KEEP FROM HER!
The Featured Fact

In Secret Empire (2017), Natasha Romanoff died in front of the whole Marvel Universe: she threw herself between Miles Morales and the Hydra Captain America's shield, and the blow broke her neck. The funeral was real, the grief was real — and, quietly, so was the Red Room's insurance policy, revealed across Tales of Suspense Vol. 1 #100–104 (2017).

The revived Black Widow Ops Program had learned to clone its finest operatives. When an agent died, a psychic operative named Epsilon Red could pour a curated set of memories into a fresh clone body — carefully edited, so the new Widow remembered only loyal service. Natasha's clone was supposed to wake up as a weapon with no past worth avenging.

Instead, her old ally Ursa Major bribed Epsilon Red, and Natasha woke with everything: the death, the life, the whole ledger. She hid her full recall from her handlers, dismantled the cloning operation from inside, destroyed the other Natasha clones so the program could never print another her, and let the world go on believing Black Widow was dead.

Why It's Obscure

Plenty of heroes return from the grave; Natasha returned from a production line, and shut the factory down herself.

Secret Empire
The public death — Natasha died shielding Miles Morales from the Hydra Captain America's shield, her neck broken in the middle of the war for Washington.
The clones
Spare Widows — The reformed Red Room cloned its best agents so a death in the field was a logistics problem, not a loss.
Epsilon Red
The bribed psychic — Memories were meant to be rationed to each clone; Ursa Major paid to give Natasha the complete, unedited set.
Tales #100
The detectives — Hawkeye and the Winter Soldier followed a trail of Widow-style assassinations and found the partner both men had buried.
