Today's Fact

In 1979 Natasha Romanoff was captured during a Hydra-backed assault on S.H.I.E.L.D. and interrogated so brutally that her mind did the one thing her training had prepared for capture: it retreated into a cover identity and locked the door. When Spider-Man found her wandering Manhattan, she insisted she was Nancy Rushman, a third-grade schoolteacher from upstate New York, and she had no idea why a Black Widow costume was folded inside her purse.
The cruel detail is that Nancy was not invented under torture — she was recycled. Rushman had been Natasha's own deep-cover alias from her first defection-era work in the United States, so the persona her psyche hid inside was one she had already lived. As Nancy she was gentle, frightened and quietly falling for Peter Parker, while her body kept betraying her with reflexes no schoolteacher should own: karate strikes, acrobatics and Widow's Bite blasts fired before she understood her own hands.
Across Marvel Team-Up Vol. 1 #82–85 (1979), by Chris Claremont and Sal Buscema, Spider-Man, Nick Fury and Shang-Chi fought through a Viper-run conspiracy aboard the Helicarrier while Natasha flickered between the two women. When her memory finally returned, she closed the door herself: Nancy had feelings for Peter, she told him plainly, but the Black Widow did not share them.
Why It's Obscure
Her safest hiding place from interrogation was a woman she had only ever pretended to be.
