Today's Fact
Checked against independent sources — the issues are cited below.
Natasha Romanoff was once married to Alexei Shostakov, a celebrated Soviet test pilot, and the KGB decided the decorated couple would serve the state better apart than together. Alexei was secretly recruited to become the Red Guardian, the Soviet answer to Captain America, while Natasha was told that her husband had died in an experimental rocket crash.
That staged bereavement was the recruitment tool. Grieving and determined to prove herself worthy of a hero's memory, Natasha accepted the training that turned her into the Black Widow — meaning her entire espionage career began as the by-product of a death notice her own government had invented.
The lie finally surfaced in Avengers Vol. 1 #43–44 (1967), when a captive Natasha came face to face with the masked Red Guardian and learned he was Alexei. He then defied his orders to protect her and a helpless Captain America from Colonel Ling, apparently dying in the explosion that let the Avengers escape.
Why It's Obscure
Her husband's funeral was a filing exercise — the state needed a widow, so it simply declared one into existence.
