BLACK WIDOW STOLE YELENA BELOVA'S FACE — AND MADE YELENA LIVE HER LIFE!
The Featured Fact

Natasha Romanoff once taught her rival a lesson by literally taking her identity. Yelena Belova, the younger Red Room graduate who had beaten Natasha's training scores, believed the Black Widow name should be hers. In the Breakdown storyline in Black Widow Vol. 2 #1–3 (2001), written by Devin Grayson and Greg Rucka, Natasha worked with Nick Fury and S.H.I.E.L.D. on an operation codenamed Validate, designed to show Yelena exactly what the job does to the person doing it.

Agents drugged and captured Yelena, brought her to the United States, and surgically swapped the two women's appearances. Yelena woke in Natasha's apartment, wearing Natasha's face, with Daredevil helping sell the illusion that she truly was Romanoff. Following planted instructions, she believed she had assassinated Yelena Belova — in reality Natasha herself, walking around in Yelena's features — and fled as a fugitive hunted for a murder of herself.

Meanwhile Natasha, wearing Yelena's face, took the assignment Yelena's commander Stalyenko handed out: tracking five Cold War nuclear warheads hidden in the Hudson Valley. Stalyenko saw through the disguise, and when Yelena overheard him admit her predecessor was disposable — if she died, they would simply make another Black Widow — the lesson landed. The faces were eventually restored, but Yelena was left shaken to her core by having lived, hunted and disposable, inside her rival's life.

Why It's Obscure

Plenty of rivals trade insults or blows; Natasha traded faces, addresses and death sentences, and billed the whole operation as mentoring.

Operation Validate
A lesson plan — Fury and S.H.I.E.L.D. helped stage the swap so Yelena would learn from the inside that a Black Widow is treated as an expendable asset.
Two Widows
Redhead for blonde — after surgery each woman carried the other's appearance: Natasha's red-haired looks on Yelena, Yelena's blonde features on Natasha.
The fake kill
Murdering herself — Yelena, convinced she was Natasha, apparently shot Yelena Belova dead, not knowing the victim was Natasha wearing her face.
The Hudson cache
Five warheads — while her rival unravelled, Natasha used Yelena's identity to chase Cold War nukes her commander planned to sell onward.

  2. Black Widow face-swap explainer — InverseNatasha explains the face-swap was meant to teach Yelena there was nothing heroic about an assassin's life, and that they were constantly used for other people's bidding.
  3. Black Widow: The Itsy-Bitsy Spider — Slings & ArrowsThe Breakdown tale, co-written by Greg Rucka, opens with Romanova convinced she is Belova and Belova confronting her commander — a deliberately confusing identity plot that coalesces by the final chapter.
