For decades, Natasha Romanoff told the same graceful origin story: a childhood of ballet, training at the Bolshoi Theatre, a gift for the stage traded for a life in espionage. The grace was real enough — the memories were not. In Richard K. Morgan’s Black Widow Vol. 4 (2004) series, Natasha travelled to Moscow chasing her own past and found that her ballet teacher had never existed and the Bolshoi had never heard of her.
The truth sat inside the Red Room. Department X had gathered 28 orphan girls and built them into deep-cover agents using psychotechnics designed by Professor Grigor Pchelintsov: near-total fabricated memories were imprinted on each girl, and every one of them was made to believe she had been trained in ballet at the Bolshoi. A cover story the agent herself believes cannot be beaten out of her, because as far as she knows it is simply her childhood.
The programming came with uglier machinery. The girls received a biochemical treatment that kept them young and resilient for decades, and the implants carried a failsafe: push too hard at the contradictions in her own recollections and Natasha’s body answered with nausea. The ballerina past was finally laid bare across Black Widow Vol. 4 #1–6 (2004), and later stories kept the implant idea, layering further sets of false memories over the first.
Why It's Obscure
Most spies guard secrets from other people; Natasha discovered that the most carefully guarded secret in her life had been kept from her, inside her own head.
