Today's Fact

For his first five years Sam Wilson fought at Captain America's side with both boots on the ground, armed with training, nerve and a loyal falcon named Redwing. In Captain America Vol. 1 #170 (1974) Sam finally admitted he felt like the weaker half of the partnership and flew to Wakanda, where, at Captain America's request, the finest engineer-king on Earth agreed to fix the problem: Black Panther designed the Falcon his first set of wings.
The harness that debuted in Captain America Vol. 1 #171 (1974) was serious Wakandan engineering — detachable jet-powered glider wings of lightweight titanium ribbing and Mylar, sheeted with wafer-thin solar receptors that fed miniature turbine jets in the uniform and boots. Marvel's own history of the Falcon notes it still took Sam a few practice tries before the new wings carried him back into the fight at Cap's side.
Wakanda's gift was not a one-time favor. When the original harness was destroyed decades later, Black Panther supplied Sam with a new costume and an emitter array that projects holographic hard-light wings — reconfigurable in flight, with a wingspan reaching fifty feet — in Captain America and the Falcon #2 (2004). Every silhouette the Falcon has cut across a Marvel sky since 1974 began on T'Challa's workbench.
Why It's Obscure
One Avenger's most famous silhouette is another Avenger's engineering — drawn up in a country most maps were not allowed to show.
