Today's Fact
One shout at a fleeing Kree ship bought Attilan a king, cost two parents, and broke his brother's mind — all in a single second.
A month after Black Bolt was finally released from nineteen years in a soundproof chamber, he caught his younger brother Maximus doing the unthinkable: cutting a secret pact with emissaries of the Kree, the aliens whose experiments had created the Inhumans in the first place. When the Kree moved to escape, the nineteen-year-old king-to-be did the one thing he had been raised never to do — he used his voice as a weapon.
He misjudged it completely. The quasi-sonic blast knocked the Kree vessel out of the sky, but the ship crashed down onto Attilan's parliament building, killing several members of the ruling Council of Genetics — among them Agon and Rynda, Black Bolt's own father and mother. The same reverberations washed over Maximus at close range and shattered his sanity, suppressing his emerging mental powers.
So the crown came to Black Bolt soaked in the worst day of his life. He took the throne of the Inhumans carrying three permanent facts: his voice had orphaned him, his brother's madness was partly his doing, and every whisper he would ever swallow as king was measured against the memory of the one that got away from him.
Why It's Obscure
Attilan's silent king is usually explained by his power — almost nobody mentions that his reign literally began with its body count.
