BLACK BOLT

Today's Fact

Attilan has endured coups, invasions and a relocation to the Moon. Its sneakiest takeover involved no army at all — just one borrowed body.

FOR MONTHS, THE 'BLACK BOLT' EVERYONE FOLLOWED WAS REALLY MAXIMUS — WEARING HIS BROTHER'S LIFE!
The Featured Fact

During the naming celebrations for Luna, infant daughter of Crystal and Quicksilver, Triton unearthed a strange crystal deep beneath Attilan whose emanations set off hallucinations across the royal gathering. In the confusion, with Black Bolt's mind weakened, Maximus reached out with his own psionic gifts and did the unthinkable: he swapped bodies with his brother.

Maximus woke up in the silent king's body, holding the throne, the terrible voice and Medusa's trust. The real Black Bolt woke up in Maximus's body and was locked away in a tube, dismissed as the mad brother raving — because who would believe a claim that sounded exactly like a Maximus delusion?

The impostor ruled for months and even answered the Grandmaster's summons in Marvel Contest of Champions #1 (1982), standing among Earth's heroes in a cosmic game while wearing his brother's face. When the swap finally came undone, it reframed every royal order of that stretch: Attilan had been governed by the one man it most feared, hiding inside the one man it most trusted.

Why It's Obscure

A coup so quiet that even the victim's silence worked against him.

THE TRIGGER
The Moon-buried crystal Triton found flooded nearby minds with hallucinations — the one moment Black Bolt's legendary mental discipline had a crack in it.
THE PRISON
No cell could hold Black Bolt's voice, so the swap itself became the cell: trapped in his brother's body, his true story sounded like a lunatic's script.
THE TELL
A silent king who suddenly schemes, orders the Royal Family against the Avengers and plays cosmic contests should have raised eyebrows sooner than it did.
THE PATTERN
Maximus swapped identities with his brother again years later during Royals (2017), proving some family traditions are just crimes with practice.
