Most Inhumans meet the Terrigen Mists as adults. Blackagar Boltagon met them before he was born: his parents, Attilan's leading geneticists, exposed him to the Mists in the womb, and he arrived with a voice wired to ambient electrons — a murmur that could shatter mountains. As an infant, studied in a laboratory, he threw a tantrum, and his cry nearly destroyed Attilan; the searchers found the baby unharmed inside an electron force-field he had raised by instinct.

The city's answer was a soundproof chamber. There Black Bolt spent the next nineteen years — schooled, trained, and fitted with an energy-harnessing suit, learning the discipline his whole life would demand: never speak, never cry out, never make a sound that could kill. The tuning-fork antenna on his brow channels the electron energy behind his voice, but the first line of defense was always silence, practiced for two decades in a locked room.

He was released at nineteen, and within a year the silence ended in tragedy: learning that his brother Maximus had bargained with the alien Kree, Black Bolt used his forbidden voice to blast a Kree ship from the sky — and it crashed onto Attilan's parliament, killing his own parents. At twenty, the boy from the soundproof room took the throne, and his queen Medusa became his voice to the world.
