In Bishop’s future, the criminal Trevor Fitzroy broke out of prison and burned the life-force of captive mutants to tear open a portal into the X-Men’s own era, dragging dozens of convicted mutant ‘Lifers’ through with him. Bishop and his fellow Xavier’s Security Enforcers officers, Malcolm and Randall, jumped in after them — knowing perfectly well that the trip only went one direction.
The three officers surfaced in the middle of a Hellfire Club party Fitzroy was tearing apart, and promptly appalled the X-Men by trying to execute the escapees on the spot. Bishop, for his part, refused to believe these could be the real X-Men at all: the legends of his childhood would never have been this gentle with killers.
The hunt finished the job the portal started. The Lifers were run down one crew at a time, but the final firefight — a nightclub full of armed fugitives — killed Malcolm and Randall at Bishop’s side. Alone, wounded, and stranded decades before his own birth, Bishop was carried back to Xavier’s school, and then sworn in as the newest X-Man.
