Today's Fact

Saving his sister's mind cost Lucas Bishop twelve months of service to the last man who saw the X-Men alive.

BISHOP WORKED A YEAR FOR THE WITNESS — THE AGED GAMBIT HE WOULD LATER HUNT AS A SUSPECTED TRAITOR!
The Featured Fact

In Bishop's home era, his sister Shard was fatally wounded by Emplates, and her mind survived only because a photon matrix could hold her personality as a hologram. Arranging that rescue meant a bargain with the ancient mutant called the Witness, who demanded a year of Bishop's labour as his price, a debt explored across X.S.E. Vol. 1 #1–4 (1996).

The Witness was also named LeBeau. He was said to be the final living person who had seen the legendary X-Men before their destruction, and Bishop understood the implication immediately: this stooped elder was, or would become, Gambit, the Cajun thief currently serving beside him in the present day.

That knowledge poisoned every later meeting between the two men. Bishop arrived in our era already carrying a garbled recording of Jean Grey naming a traitor inside the team, and the one suspect who fitted his evidence was the grinning card-thrower whose older self had employed him. The actual betrayer proved to be an aspect of Professor X that became Onslaught, yet Bishop had spent years watching the wrong man's hands.

Why It's Obscure

Imagine owing a year's wages to a co-worker you have not met yet, decades before he grows into your boss.

The bargain
A sister, priced in service — Shard's transfer into a holographic matrix was the Witness's gift, and Bishop's year of work was the invoice he accepted without haggling.
LeBeau
A surname as a clue — Learning that the Witness answered to LeBeau tied the future's oldest survivor to the present's most secretive X-Man in one syllable-heavy hint.
The recording
Jean's last warning — Bishop had recovered footage of Jean Grey fleeing a traitor among the X-Men, and he measured every living member against that fragment for years.
Onslaught
The suspect cleared too late — The traitor Bishop hunted turned out to grow from Charles Xavier himself, which meant Gambit endured suspicion for a crime committed by the team's founder.
