BISHOP OPENED A WAR COLLEGE ON KRAKOA — AND MADE 'HOW TO FAIL' THE FIRST LESSON!

The Featured Fact

After Cyclops stepped aside, Lucas Bishop became Captain Commander of Krakoa, the island's top military officer — and decided paradise needed a school for war. In Bishop: War College #1 (2023) he takes charge of a first class of young fighters — Armor, Surge, Cam Long, Aura Charles and Amass — under a course objective Marvel printed in plain capital letters: get strong, defend the island, keep mutantkind safe.

His opening lesson, announced before the recruits had settled in, was HOW TO FAIL. Bishop drilled his students like a siege was already scheduled, and the method drew open resistance: fellow educator Dani Moonstar confronted him over the X-Men's long habit of turning students into soldiers, forcing Krakoa's hardest soldier and one of its most protective teachers to argue out what training young mutants is actually for.

Then the island graded the class itself. Drilling beneath Krakoa, Bishop's recruits stumbled onto the Fenris twins and an Orchis team boring toward the Pit, and exposure to Blightswill hurled Bishop and Tempo out of time while the students' powers misfired around them. The recruits held the line anyway — by Bishop: War College #5 every one of them had passed, and their instructor was already greeting the next intake.

Why It's Obscure

A man raised in a mutant prison camp looked at utopia and asked who was training its children to survive it.

The job

Captain Commander — Elevated in Inferno (2021) after Cyclops resigned the post, Bishop outranked every War Captain on Krakoa — and used the authority to open a school.

2023

The first class — Armor, Surge, Cam Long, Aura Charles and Amass enrolled for combat and tactics, with Tempo and Wrongslide joining the training rotation.

The argument

Moonstar objects — Dani Moonstar, who teaches Krakoa's younger mutants herself, challenged Bishop's drill-sergeant regime as one more draft of children into someone else's war.

Blightswill

Final exam, unplanned — Orchis poison in the tunnels knocked powers sideways and scattered Bishop and Tempo through time, leaving the students to finish the fight unsupervised.
