BISHOP HUNTED HIS OWN PEOPLE FOR THE GOVERNMENT — THEN SAVED THEM WITH CYCLOPS' BLAST!
The Featured Fact

After the Decimation left only a few hundred mutants powered, Bishop made a choice that split him from the X-Men: he sided with the government. Working with the Office of National Emergency — O*N*E — he accepted a mission in Civil War: X-Men Vol. 1 #1 (2006) to recapture the escaped group known as the 198, the mutants who had fled the guarded grounds of the Xavier Institute rather than live under Sentinel watch.

Val Cooper and Tony Stark backed the operation, and Bishop led fellow agents Micromax and Sabra into the field against people he knew by name. Domino and Shatterstar had broken the 198 out, and Cyclops led the original X-Men in a rival race to protect them, so the hunter and the hunted kept colliding — former teammates on opposite sides of a manhunt Bishop insisted was about preventing a darker future.

The pursuit collapsed when O*N*E director General Demetrius Lazer betrayed everyone, using the mutant Johnny Dee to force a fight and sealing the 198 inside a desert bunker rigged with hidden weapons of mass destruction. Bishop switched sides on the spot: he let Cyclops pour a full-power optic blast into him, absorbed more energy than his body could safely hold, and vented it upward in a blast that tore through the bunker doors — then stayed to pull the very mutants he had been sent to arrest out of the wreckage before the countdown ended.

Why It's Obscure

A man raised in mutant internment camps volunteered to police the last mutants on Earth — and his reward for that loyalty was a general who tried to use him as a detonator.

The 198
A census, not a team — the nickname counted the mutants still powered after M-Day who had gathered, and then fled, under the Institute's Sentinel guard.
The badge again
O*N*E colours — Bishop argued that cooperating with the authorities was the only way to keep a frightened government from finishing what the Decimation started.
The betrayal
General Lazer — the agency's own director stage-managed a mutant-versus-mutant fight and locked his quarry in with ticking WMDs to solve the problem permanently.
The overload
Living battery — Bishop's gift is absorbing energy, and Cyclops gave him more than any safe limit; the surplus became the key that blew the bunker open from inside.
