The silent Aboriginal teleporter Gateway — the old man who sat on Uluru spinning a bullroarer and opening portals for the Outback X-Men — is Lucas Bishop's direct ancestor: his great-grandfather. Bishop learned it in X-Treme X-Men #4 (2001), when he was pulled into the Dreamtime and shown images of his own bloodline.
The vision came at a graveside moment: Psylocke had just been killed by Vargas, and her spirit — a guest of Gateway in the Dreamtime — helped explain what Bishop was seeing on Ayers Rock, a place he recognized from tales his mother told him growing up. Behind him lay the past, ahead the future, to one side his alternate selves — and in the family images, Gateway.
It quietly rewrites Bishop's origin: the future cop from the camps is not just Australian-born (to Burnum and Kadee Bishop, who fled a nuclear strike on Australia for America) — he is the descendant of one of the X-Men's oldest, strangest allies, a mutant who could open doors through space, time, and dimensions. The man who policed time had a time-and-space teleporter in his family tree all along.
Why It's Obscure
Everybody knows the 'M' brand and the big gun. Almost nobody knows Bishop's great-grandfather was already an X-Men ally decades before Bishop was born — the near-silent teleporter Gateway.
