Today's Fact
Hank McCoy stopped three robbers on camera during a school football game, and two very different recruiters saw the broadcast — Professor X, and a would-be world conqueror.
A TELEVISED FOOTBALL TACKLE GOT BEAST’S PARENTS KIDNAPPED — AND GOT HIM RECRUITED!
The Featured Fact

Teenage Hank McCoy, teased relentlessly for his oversized hands and feet, only got his chance on the school football team because Jennifer Nyles — the classmate he was tutoring in biology — talked the coach into using him. He became a star. Then, mid-game, three robbers snatched the gate money and fled straight across the field, and Hank flattened all three of them in front of the television cameras.

One viewer was a costumed criminal called the Conquistador, who decided on the spot that the boy was a weapon worth owning. He kidnapped Norton and Edna McCoy and gave Hank his terms: steal an experimental device for the Conquistador’s army, or lose his parents.

The other viewer had kinder plans. Professor Charles Xavier sent his young X-Men to the rescue, the McCoys came home safe, and Xavier offered Hank the one prize no scholarship could match — a school built for minds like his, with limitless room to learn. Hank accepted, and kept the playground insult he had already answered to for years: Beast.

Why It's Obscure
Before the doctorate, the lab coat and the blue fur, there was a kick-off, a robbery, and a ransom demand.
DUNFEE

THE GOLDEN ARM

The nickname came first and the heroism later: classmates coined ‘Beast’ as a taunt years before Hank wore it as a codename.
THE BROADCAST

THREE ROBBERS DOWN

A televised citizen’s arrest by a schoolboy athlete is wonderful publicity — unless a conqueror happens to be watching the sports report.
THE CONQUISTADOR

THE RANSOM

His scheme needed exactly one superhuman teenager and two hostages. It remains the pettiest recruitment drive in X-Men history.
XAVIER’S

THE OTHER OFFER

Xavier’s pitch never mentioned danger or costumes. He sold Hank on the library — and it worked instantly.
