Today's Fact

A one-hour disguise, a missed deadline, and a rubber face — how Hank McCoy's most famous look started as a costume he could not take off.

BEAST DRANK HIS OWN MUTATION SERUM TO GO UNDERCOVER — THEN HID THE FUR UNDER A LATEX HANK McCOY MASK!
The Featured Fact

In 1972, Hank McCoy quit the X-Men to do genetics research at the Brand Corporation — and promptly isolated the hormonal extract that causes mutation itself. When his superior, Carl Maddicks, schemed to steal top-secret research, Hank could not stop the theft as himself without exposing the work. So he drank his own extract, mutating further on purpose so nobody would recognize him while he intervened.

The disguise had an expiry time of roughly one hour. The furred, fanged form was supposed to be temporary, but the fight over the stolen research ran long, the window to reverse the change closed, and the transformation locked in permanently — grey fur at first, with pointed ears, claws and a healing factor he had never asked for.

Rather than tell anyone, Hank went home and studied stage make-up. He built himself a latex mask of his own former face, matching gloves for his hands, and a harness of straps to force his newly hunched posture upright — then walked back into Brand the next morning dressed as the man he used to be, and kept the secret even from the X-Men.

Why It's Obscure

The blue icon began as an accident in a lab coat — and for months, "Hank McCoy" was the disguise and the Beast was the truth.

AMAZING ADVENTURES #11 (1972)
The self-experiment. Gerry Conway and Tom Sutton gave Beast his furry form in Amazing Adventures Vol. 2 #11 — not through an enemy's attack or a second mutation event, but through a dose Hank measured out and swallowed himself.
ONE HOUR
The missed deadline. The extract was designed to wear off or be reversed within about an hour. Every retelling since — the Marvel Database, uncannyxmen.net's biography, CBR's history of the look — agrees on the cruel detail: he simply ran out of time.
AMAZING ADVENTURES #12 (1972)
The rubber Hank. The following issue shows the lengths of the cover-up: a synthetic mask and gloves copied from his own face and hands, plus straps and bands to hold his spine straight. A kiss from his girlfriend Linda nearly ended the charade on day one.
GREY BEFORE BLUE
Wrong colour, right silhouette. The fur arrived grey, darkened after his clash with the living computer Quasimodo, and only settled into the famous blue through a colouring drift later acknowledged in Avengers Annual #6 (1976) — a saga this archive covered on an earlier day.
