Today's Fact

A heart failing under one mutation too many left Hank McCoy with time for exactly one outrageous experiment.

DYING OF HIS OWN MUTATION, BEAST DRAGGED THE TEENAGE X-MEN INTO THE PRESENT TO SHAME CYCLOPS STRAIGHT!
The Featured Fact

All-New X-Men Vol. 1 #1 (2012) opens with Beast on the floor of his laboratory, mutating yet again and privately convinced that this change would kill him. Cyclops had recently killed Professor X while possessed by the Phoenix, then escaped custody to lead a militant mutant movement, and Hank wanted one worthwhile act left on his ledger before his body gave out.

His solution ignored every rule he usually lectured other people about. Hank travelled back to the early days of the Xavier school and recruited the original five students — young Cyclops, Jean Grey, Iceman, Angel and his own teenage self — carrying them forward so the adult Scott Summers would have to look his hopeful younger face in the eye.

The teenagers learned that Jean was dead in this era, that Xavier died at Scott's hands and that their school had fractured into rival camps. Young Hank grasped what the trip really was when his older self collapsed: a dying man's confession, staged with a time machine, aimed at rescuing an old friend from becoming someone the boy would fear.

Why It's Obscure

Most heroes leave a will. Hank left five bewildered teenagers and a timeline held together with hope.

2012
An Iceman aside, taken literally — Bobby Drake remarked that young Scott would despise the man he grew into, and Hank treated the throwaway line as an engineering brief.
Five guests
Recruited at the schoolhouse door — The adult Beast arrived just as his younger self was preparing to quit the team for the first time, and talked all five founders into one trip forward.
The collapse
Diagnosis delivered in person — After reaching the Jean Grey School, the older Hank fell in front of his guests, and teenage Hank told the others that his future self was dying.
Years, not weeks
A visit that refused to end — The five stayed in the present for years of publication, growing into different people before the timeline finally allowed them home.
