Hank McCoy has worn a lot of hats — Avenger, Defender, teacher. The one almost nobody remembers is orbiting outlaw.
After breaking with Cyclops over the direction of the X-Men, Hank quit the team and signed on with S.W.O.R.D., the orbital agency that watches Earth for alien trouble, run by Commander Abigail Brand — who also happened to be his girlfriend. S.W.O.R.D. Vol. 1 #1 (2009) opens with Hank arriving at the Peak, the agency's space station, ready to start work.
Waiting for him was Henry Peter Gyrich, installed as co-commander by Norman Osborn, with a plan to round up and deport every alien living on Earth. Brand refused, and when Gyrich moved against her, Brand, Beast and the dragon Lockheed went on the run from their own agency.
The fugitive stint turned S.W.O.R.D. inside out: the scientist and the commander he loved ended up hiding from the organization they had both sworn to serve, while Gyrich purged the station around them. Hank eventually returned to the X-Men, but the episode stands as the strangest line on his résumé — wanted man, in orbit, for defending aliens.
A resignation, a romance and a manhunt — all conducted in low Earth orbit.
