BEAST GAVE THE DEFENDERS A CHARTER — TURNING MARVEL'S FAMOUS NON-TEAM INTO A REAL ONE!
The Featured Fact

The Defenders were Marvel's proudest mess: no charter, no fixed roster and no headquarters, just heroes drifting through Doctor Strange's townhouse whenever trouble knocked. That looseness ended in The Defenders Vol. 1 #125 (1983), when a Tribunal prophecy convinced Doctor Strange, the Hulk, Namor and the Silver Surfer that operating together would destroy the Earth, and all four founders walked away.

The recruit who refused to lock up behind them was Beast. Hank McCoy rebuilt the leftovers — Valkyrie, Gargoyle and Moondragon — into an official superhero team with government clearance, then recruited his oldest friends Angel and Iceman from the original X-Men class. The series itself was retitled The New Defenders to mark the experiment, complete with a Rocky Mountain headquarters and an actual membership list.

There is a special comedy in the most bookish X-Man handing bylaws to the one Marvel team allergic to paperwork, yet his structure held for years. It finally collapsed after Moondragon's possession by the Dragon of the Moon and the grim finale of The New Defenders #152 (1986), an ending that conveniently freed Beast, Angel and Iceman to reunite the original five as X-Factor.

Why It's Obscure

Marvel's loosest team met the one hero who alphabetizes his bookshelves, and structure won — for a while.

The non-team
No rules on purpose — For over a hundred issues the Defenders bragged about having no charter, no by-laws and no permanent lineup, which made Hank's reorganization a genuine culture shock.
1983
A prophecy empties the room — The Tribunal's warning that the four founders' combined energies would doom the planet removed Strange, Hulk, Namor and the Surfer in a single stroke.
The recruits
Old classmates, new badges — Angel and Iceman joined Valkyrie, Gargoyle and Moondragon under Beast's leadership, giving the reformed team three-fifths of the original X-Men.
1986
The Dragon of the Moon — Moondragon's corruption ended the formal Defenders in tragedy, scattering the survivors and closing the charter Beast had written.
