BEAST WAS A MUTANT FROM HIS VERY FIRST BREATH — BECAUSE HIS FATHER SURVIVED A NUCLEAR ACCIDENT BEFORE HANK WAS EVEN CONCEIVED!
The Featured Fact

Most mutants wait for puberty to change their lives; Hank McCoy arrived pre-changed. Born in Dundee, Illinois to Norton and Edna McCoy, the infant Hank already had unusually long limbs, a startling intellect and hands and feet so oversized that nobody needed a geneticist to tell them something singular had happened — his origin, filled in across X-Men #49–53 (1968–69), pointed the explanation at his father’s workplace.

Norton McCoy worked at a nuclear power plant, where an accident dosed him with intense radiation. Norton himself walked away apparently unharmed; the exposure, later accounts agree, appears to have rewritten something he passed on, so that his son’s mutation was switched on from birth rather than waiting for adolescence like nearly every other mutant of his generation.

The proportions those genes handed the boy were frankly simian — long arms, long legs, and extremities built like catchers’ mitts — and schoolmates converted the whole package into the nickname ‘Magilla Gorilla.’ What the teasing missed is that the same oversized hands and feet came with prehensile dexterity: young Hank could work with his feet as fluently as with his fingers, wedging toes into cracks a climber would envy, so the body that marked him out was also the first instrument his famous brain ever got to play.

Why It's Obscure

Plenty of origin stories begin with an accident; Hank’s began with somebody else’s, a generation early, and he has been living in the footnote ever since.

The father
Norton’s bad day — a nuclear plant accident flooded Norton McCoy with radiation and left him visibly untouched, which makes him possibly the only man in Marvel history whose worst workplace incident was inherited.
The newborn
No waiting period — mutant traits almost always surface at puberty, yet Hank’s were on display in the maternity ward: long limbs, huge hands and feet, and a mind that started outrunning adults while he was still small enough to carry.
The nickname
Magilla Gorilla — schoolyard cruelty aimed at his gorilla-like proportions; Hank kept the insult in the record himself, which tells you the future Avenger had already decided the joke aged worse than he would.
The dexterity
Four hands, effectively — those outsized feet were not ballast: Hank could grip, climb and manipulate objects with them as precisely as with his hands, a party trick that quietly underwrote his entire acrobatic fighting style.

Bullpen Bulletins

  1. Beast (Marvel Comics) — WikipediaWikipedia’s biography records that Norton McCoy’s intense radiation exposure at a nuclear power plant before Hank’s birth appears to have caused his son’s mutation, and that Hank was born with vast intellect, unusually long arms and legs, and unusually large hands and feet — a rare case of mutant powers manifesting before puberty.
  2. Beaster Eggs: 20 Strange Secrets About the X-Men's Beast — CBRCBR’s ’Born to be an X-Man’ entry confirms the radiation exposure behind Hank’s immense intelligence and unusually long appendages, including the large hands and feet he could use with equal dexterity.
  3. Beast Biography — Mighty Avengers (UncannyX-Men.net)The biography states plainly that Norton worked in a nuclear plant, that this was heavily implied to be the cause of Hank’s mutation, and that from the moment of his birth his large hands and feet made it obvious Hank was a mutant.
