PROFESSOR X WILLED BEAST AN INFINITY GEM — AND A SEAT IN THE ILLUMINATI!

The Featured Fact

Charles Xavier planned for his own death the way he planned everything else: quietly, and inside somebody else’s head. After Xavier fell during Avengers vs. X-Men, a telepathic prompt he had buried in the mind of his very first student woke up and started giving directions — which is how Beast found himself following his dead mentor’s instructions through the mansion in New Avengers Vol. 3 #3 (2013).

The trail ended at a hidden safe — combination, fittingly, “GIFTED” — holding Xavier’s secret Illuminati records and the Mind Gem he had guarded for the cabal. The other members arrived to collect both the stone and its heir, and Hank McCoy took his professor’s chair among Iron Man, Mr. Fantastic, Doctor Strange, Black Panther, Namor and Black Bolt, inheriting a conspiracy along with the jewel.

His first meeting doubled as a field test. With another Earth bearing down on theirs in an incursion, the reassembled Infinity Gauntlet went to Captain America, who shoved the invading world back and shattered the gems doing it — after which the cabal, Hank included, voted to erase the event from Rogers’ memory so the group could keep weighing options he refused to weigh. Membership, Beast learned in a single afternoon, came with homework measured in worlds.

Why It's Obscure

Most inheritances are furniture and paperwork; Xavier left his favourite student a doomsday club and the keys to its armoury.

The will

Instructions from beyond — Xavier did not leave a letter or a lawyer; he left a trigger planted in Hank’s mind years earlier, set to fire only once its author was beyond questioning.

The safe

Password: GIFTED — behind that single loaded word sat the two most dangerous heirlooms in the mansion: proof the Illuminati existed, and the Mind Gem Xavier had carried for it.

The Gauntlet

One use, then gravel — Beast’s gem completed the rebuilt Gauntlet just long enough for Captain America to repel the first incursion, and the strain broke every stone in the setting.

The wipe

Secret-keeping as policy — when Rogers balked at preparing to destroy other Earths, his new colleagues edited his memory instead of his opinion, and Hank stayed in the room for the vote.
