The Featured Fact

For years the Legacy Virus, a plague engineered by Stryfe, ate mutantkind from the inside — and it had already taken Illyana Rasputina, Colossus’s little sister. The breakthrough came from the dying Moira MacTaggert, who finally saw how to unpick the disease and passed her data to the X-Men before she died. Beast turned that data into a working cure in Uncanny X-Men Vol. 1 #390 (2001).

Then Hank read the fine print. The virus had originally spread when its first host used their powers and died — and the cure obeyed the same brutal symmetry. Released through a mutant, it would blanket the world and end the plague, but that first mutant would die releasing it. Hank shelved the serum on the spot and went back to his notes, determined to engineer a version that cost nobody anything.

Colossus never gave him the chance. Piotr sealed himself inside the medilab, injected himself with the cure, and shifted into his steel form — knowing exactly what the transformation would do. The cure washed out across the planet and the Legacy Virus era ended with him. Beast had solved the unsolvable problem; his friend paid the invoice Hank refused to hand to anyone.
