A NEAR-FATAL BEATING TURNED BEAST INTO A CAT!
The Featured Fact

Hank McCoy’s ape-like body survived decades of punishment, but the swordsman Vargas nearly ended him during the hunt for Destiny’s diaries. Gravely wounded, Hank was rushed home — and his teammate Sage jump-started his dormant secondary mutation to save his life, as recounted across X-Treme X-Men and New X-Men in 2001.

He woke up as something new: a hulking feline form with a lion-like head, cat feet, claws and senses sharpened to twenty times human normal, plus a healing factor that knitted injuries in hours. The price was dexterity — the huge paws that made him stronger also ended finer skills. Hank’s own rueful summary of the trade was that he used to play guitar, and was now learning the drums.

The humiliations piled up fast. A psychic assault by Cassandra Nova left him beaten into a coma by the mind-controlled student Beak, swinging a titanium baseball bat. His girlfriend Trish Tilby ended their relationship over the phone amid tabloid accusations, and Hank, stung, briefly claimed to be gay purely to wound her back — a spiteful lie the press then gleefully printed as fact.

Why It's Obscure

Most secondary mutations hand a mutant a bonus power. Hank’s rewired his whole silhouette, cost him the fine motor skills his science depended on, and turned his private life into tabloid fodder.

Vargas
The trigger — a near-lethal wounding in the Destiny diaries hunt left Beast’s body desperate enough to mutate again rather than die.
Sage
The jump-start — Sage’s power nudged the dormant secondary mutation awake, trading Hank’s ape frame for a bigger, faster, cat-like one.
The cost
Paws, not fingers — strength, senses and healing all surged, while manual dexterity collapsed; the guitarist of the X-Men had to relearn music on drums.
Cassandra Nova
The coma — Nova’s puppet Beak beat the newly feline Beast senseless with a titanium bat, and the devolution dread that followed haunted Hank for years.
