Today's Fact

One of the most famous silhouettes in comics — Wolverine’s winged yellow mask — was not designed for Wolverine at all. As revealed in X-Men Legends Vol. 2 #1–2 (2022) by Roy Thomas, the mask was Beast’s first: Hank McCoy wore it while brainwashed by Mesmero into a masked, amnesiac servant calling himself “Wildlife.”
The story is set in the gap between The Incredible Hulk #181–182 and Giant-Size X-Men #1 — right after Wolverine’s debut. Mesmero had escaped the Secret Empire (after the Captain America storyline) and was looting a Brand Corporation facility with Wildlife at his side; the mask existed so nobody would recognize the very recognizable Dr. McCoy. Sent after the same prize, Wolverine fought the Living Diamond (Jack of Diamonds) — and the diamond-hard villain shredded Wolverine’s own mask to ribbons.
Beast, snapping out of the brainwashing, no longer needed his disguise — so Wolverine simply took Beast’s mask and wore it. The swap stuck for nearly fifty years of publication: the pointed, winged cowl that replaced Logan’s original whiskered debut mask, the one the world now reads instantly as “Wolverine,” began life covering the face of a hypnotized Hank McCoy.
Why It's Obscure
A 48-year-old costume mystery, solved in 2022: Wolverine’s mask changed between his first appearance and Giant-Size X-Men #1 because he borrowed it — from a brainwashed Beast who didn’t need it anymore.
