Today's Fact
Sean Cassidy beat Moses Magnum by matching an earthquake weapon note for note, and the price was the very voice his entire power depends on.
BANSHEE SCREAMED HIMSELF SILENCED — AND SAT OUT THE X-MEN FOR A DECADE!
The Featured Fact

In Japan, the earthquake-powered terrorist Moses Magnum gave the government an ultimatum: surrender the country or watch his Magnum Force shake it into the sea. While his teammates fought through Magnum’s Mandroid guards, Banshee climbed alone into the path of the weapon and answered seismic force with sonic force.

Sean held a sustained wall of screaming vibration against the Magnum waves, tuning his voice up and down the scale until the two energies cancelled and Magnum’s island base blew apart around them. Japan was saved. Banshee spent the following days in a coma — and woke up able to speak, but unable to scream.

The damage sat exactly where his mutation lived: his vocal cords. With the sonic scream destroyed, Cassidy left front-line duty (departing by Uncanny X-Men #129, 1980) and based himself at Muir Island with Moira MacTaggert, helping as an investigator and ally. His full power only crept back years later, in time for a return in Uncanny X-Men #254 (1989) and, eventually, headmaster duty in Generation X.

Why It's Obscure
Most heroes lose a power to a villain’s device or a writer’s decree; Sean Cassidy lost his by spending it, all at once, on purpose.
JAPAN

THE ULTIMATUM

Magnum did not want money or hostages. He wanted a country, and he had brought an earthquake machine as his negotiating style.
#119 (1979)

THE COUNTER-NOTE

Banshee did not dodge the weapon or smash it — he sang against it, frequency for frequency, until something had to give. It was his throat.
MUIR ISLAND

THE QUIET YEARS

A decade of publication passed with the X-Men’s loudest member reduced to detective work, research support, and watching other people fly to the rescue.
#254 (1989)

THE VOICE RETURNS

Healing finished what medicine could not rush: the scream came back, and with it the strangest second act in X-Men history — mentor to Generation X.
