Today's Fact

A stranger burst into Avengers Mansion with a murder confession, a hostage and a marriage proposal. He was the groom all along.

YELLOWJACKET CLAIMED HE HAD KILLED HANK PYM — THEN MARRIED THE WASP AT AVENGERS MANSION!
The Featured Fact

In Avengers #59 (1968), a gum-chewing stranger in a yellow-and-black costume calling himself Yellowjacket forced his way into Avengers Mansion with the boldest job application in team history: he announced that he had killed founding member Hank Pym, and that the vacancy was therefore his. When the Avengers moved on him, he stunned them all and carried off the Wasp at gunpoint.

The truth was stranger than the claim. Days earlier, Pym — brooding in his lab over his guilt and his unspoken wish to marry Janet van Dyne — had smashed vials of untested chemicals and breathed in the gases. The exposure split his personality: the timid, guilt-ridden Pym was buried, and a swaggering, reckless second self walked out wearing a new costume and honestly believing Pym was gone.

Janet worked it out from a single kiss and made the most quietly heroic call of her career: she played along. Rejecting Yellowjacket might shatter what was left of Hank's mind, so in Avengers #60 (1968) she married him — at the Mansion, in front of the whole team. When the Circus of Crime crashed the wedding and Janet was nearly killed, the shock snapped Pym back to himself. The couple looked at the paperwork, shrugged, and stayed married: the ceremony, performed under a false name and a fractured mind, was entirely legal.

Why It's Obscure

Superhero weddings are usually interrupted by villains. This one was interrupted by the groom remembering he existed.

Avengers #59
A murder for a membership card — Yellowjacket demands Pym's seat on the roster on the grounds that he has just killed Pym, then abducts the Wasp when the team objects.
The accident
Chemistry, not villainy — No enemy created Yellowjacket. A spilled rack of experimental gases and a mind already cracking under guilt did the whole job in Pym's own lab.
The kiss
One-woman diagnosis — Janet identifies Hank instantly from his kiss, tells no one, and treats a wedding as the safest available form of psychiatric first aid.
Avengers #60
Married, retroactively sane — The Circus of Crime's attack restores Pym mid-reception, and the Pyms decide a legal marriage is a legal marriage, breakdown or not.
