The Featured Fact

In Mighty Avengers Vol. 1 #30 (2009), Hank Pym — then wearing the Wasp identity in honour of the late Janet van Dyne — kept growing. Past giant size, past the Macroverse Reed Richards had mapped, Pym pushed into Overspace, a plane above and apart from all realities, and found Eternity, the living embodiment of the universe, waiting to talk.

Eternity's verdict stunned him: “You are Earth's Scientist Supreme!” — the scientific counterpart to Doctor Strange's Sorcerer Supreme. The reasoning was precise. Reed Richards is the Explorer, for whom science is pure discovery; Tony Stark is the Engineer, for whom science is a tool. “But you, Hank Pym… you are the Mage,” Eternity said — the one who takes science to the very point of magic for no other reason than that he can.

Eternity named Pym its champion and founder of Avengers yet to come, and Pym built on the title at once, founding teams and schools under its banner. One asterisk hangs over the honour forever: Loki later claimed that he had been posing as Eternity that day to manipulate Pym — a claim from the god of lies about the proudest moment of Hank Pym's life, which readers are free to weigh accordingly.

Richards explores and Stark engineers; the universe looked at Pym's record and chose the word 'mage'.

Above everything — Pym grows beyond the Macroverse into Overspace, the vantage point above all realities, to reach his appointment with Eternity.

2009

The verdict — Mighty Avengers #30: Eternity declares Hank Pym Earth's Scientist Supreme, its other champion beside the Sorcerer Supreme.
