Today's Fact
His endless life is not written into his blood. It hangs in a capsule at his throat — and the ally he trusted most once walked away wearing it.
The Cosmic Control Rod does far more for Annihilus than rearrange molecules and throw energy around. Insects are brief creatures, and continuous exposure to the Rod’s energies has retarded his aging for centuries — slowing his cellular degeneration, warding off disease and leaving the Living Death That Walks effectively immortal for exactly as long as he keeps hold of it. His paranoia has a power source, and the power source is portable.
Portable means stealable, and the thief was an insider. Annihilus and Blastaar, the rival warlord of Baluur, had built one of their uneasy alliances around A.I.M.’s Super-Adaptoid — until the scheme collapsed, the Avengers intervened, and Annihilus killed Blastaar’s mate Nyglar, who had betrayed the plan. In retaliation Blastaar took the Rod for himself and abandoned his former partner to weaken and deteriorate rapidly, a centuries-old tyrant suddenly aging on an insect’s clock.
What a dying Annihilus did next tells you how completely the Rod is his life: he dragged himself through the portal to Earth, seized Franklin Richards and the boy’s governess Agatha Harkness as hostages, and tried to ransom them for the Rod’s return, forcing the Fantastic Four to go and fetch his immortality back. Blastaar eventually revived him and the Rod was regained — but the lesson stands in the record: Annihilus does not fear death abstractly. He has watched it arrive, on schedule, the one time somebody else was holding the Rod.
Why It's Obscure
An empire, a fleet and a Wave — all of it collateral on a single object small enough to steal.
